Joshua 9- The Treaty With the Gibeonites 9.7.09

Joshua 9- The Treaty With the Gibeonites 9.7.09

At the beginning of this chapter, we see that the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and the Jebusites, were all gathering together to do battle with Israel. But the inhabitants of Gibeon were so afraid of the Israelites and their God that they decided not to join up with the rest of their friends. Instead, they decided to play dress up.

So, they pretended to be ambassadors from a far country, and went to Joshua to make a covenant with them. Joshua, without seeking guidance from the Lord, decided to take them at their word, and let them live. After the ambassadors had stayed at the Israelites' camp for a few days, Joshua found out that the men were actually their close neighbors, (not from a far country at all), whom the Lord wanted them to destroy. But, after making a covenant with the Gibeonites not to destroy them, the Israelites knew they could not go back on their word. They had to let them live.

Do I make hasty decisions without seeking the Lord's guidance and direction first?
