For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

And I have declared to them Your name, and will declare it, that the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them."

Can you imagine someone having a ton of wealth and other possessions, all that they could ever want, and suddenly just be willing to give it all up, just because of love? That's what the Son of God did.
He had all he could ever want, and instead of just thinking of Himself, he decided to die for sinful people. Kind of amazing when you think about it. What could God have seen in us that He would want to die for? The answer is nothing.
God, seeing us as being completely sinful, knew that there was nothing we could do to earn our own way to heaven, and so sent His Son to be our savior. He didn't want us to spend eternity in a place of torment. He wanted to have a relationship with us, one that only He could give. It has absolutely nothing to do with our being good enough to get ourselves to heaven, it is completely through Him that we are saved.
